HD Video Format Information ( HDV XDCAM-HD HDCAM HDCAM+SR )

HDV

This is the entry level format which takes you into the world of High Definition video. With the HDV format, the benefits of High Definition are at accessible to those on a budget.
Ideal migration from DVCAM users to entry-level HD, HDV records pictures at 1080 line resolution onto a DV format cassette. Media costs with this format are very favourable.

Features dual-format HDV/DVCAM recording and playback with the same camcorder or VTR editing deck (not a feature of the FX1 HDV camera). Incorporate HDV material into the HDCAM via an external converter.

A big improvment in quality from DVCAM. HDV editing on PC will require compatible hardware and software.

XDCAM-HD

Rated between HDV and HDCAM in terms of picture quality, features and price.
Records High Definition pictures onto a solid, removable disc. MPEG Long GOP encoding ensures crisp, clear picture quality with true 1080-line resolution. The data rate can be switched between 35/25/18Mbps, allowing picture quality and recording time to be chosen, tailored for the application.

Automatically records low-resolution proxy files, metadata and thumbnail pictures and onto the optical disc alongside high resolution video.

HDCAM

Premier quality output on Standard Definition budgets. Ideal format for television drama, documentaries or commercials, HDCAM offers superb High Definition picture performance.

Whether you prefer to post produce in HDCAM or downconvert for editing within existing SD infrastructures, HDCAM offers greater flexibility to match your creative preferences and production needs. Shoot at 25P to give your television productions a prestige, ‘filmic’ look. Alternatively, select 50i or 60i for a more immediate feel, especially with fast-moving action – the choice is yours.

HDCAM can be edited in a native, totally lossless environment with the Sony XPRI family of non-linear editing systems. It’s also easy to transfer HDCAM rushes via an i.LINK (IEEE 1394) connection for lowcost off-line editing in SD with a wide range of popular desktop packages. Providing an ideal entry point to High Definition for production customers working within Standard Definition budgets, the new HDW-730S HDCAM camcorder is priced below equivalent Digital Betacam models
